Meet Jennifer Mahaney

I’ve lived in Northern Kentucky my whole life and I have always worked here and in Cincinnati. I have been a mental health therapist for almost 20 years (although I can’t believe that’s possible!). I’ve worked with both adults and children and done individual and group sessions. I have even spent some time working on a suicide/crisis hotline. Most recently, my work has focused on children, although I have a lot of experience collaborating with school staff and parents, and in other areas as well.

The best part about being a counselor, for me, is the change I get to see in others. Kids are almost always enthusiastic about making things better and adults who come in for therapy are invested in the process of change. I am a firm believer in the idea that “when you know better, you do better.” In therapy, my clients and I learn all sorts of things. We talk about their experiences and feelings and consider alternative points of view. We discuss responses and behavior and think about how effective they were. We reflect on how things could be handled differently and what that might be like.

Since I believe in learning better, I have completed several comprehensive training programs. I participated in a year long training and supervision program to become certified in Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). This is a treatment method especially helpful for clients who have experienced fear provoking or stressful life events.

Next, I completed a program in Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP). CPP is an excellent treatment for adults and/or children who are struggling with the relationships in their lives. Finally, I am in the process of wrapping up a training program to become a Registered Play Therapist (RPT). Play is the language of children and sometimes it can be difficult for kids to verbalize their thoughts and feelings. Using play in session is a great way to connect with kids and help them understand all sorts of things, and of course, when they know better, they will do better!

My approach with patients tends to be eclectic. That just means that I like to meet clients where they are, and provide the type of support that I think would benefit them the most. I don’t subscribe to a specific kind of therapy (I promise I won’t ask you to lie down on a couch and “tell me about your mother”). I am a fan of client-centered therapy, in that I believe that no one knows more about you than you. My role is to help you explore what you know and questions that you may have, in order to make changes that may be helpful to you.

If you’d like to start therapy with me, or if you have some questions you’d like to ask first, please schedule a free 15 minute phone consult with me.
